It’s true, legal does not always mean ethical.

MLM is networking and networking is sales and everything you do in life is sales including dealing with families. Teaching your kids to listen is not always easy and to do it you must ’sell’ the child on the fact that there are consequences for their actions. In that way, the MLM concept is like the family structure. The point here is, MLM and any other real life relationships employ similar skills and attributes. Of course, that still doesn’t make it legal or ethical.

Humans are social beings and all of life’s social interactions are about networking. You simply can not make money in anything without selling and networking. Even if you work in a factory you sell yourself and your work to your boss to maintain a job and an income.

In families you most certainly do take. If you don’t… poor you! My family gives me endless love and joy. They support me when times are bad and scold & teach me when I’ve lost my way. If we didn’t need and receive those kinds of benefits, then there would be little point in investing your time, money and love into your family. You give and you take just as you do in your job. Networking is no different. The ones who are successful at taking (i.e. getting paid) are those who learn how to give (i.e. help others to succeed).

The main issue here is not what MLM is similar to. The main point I am trying to make is that, I have no reason to believe that the MLM concept is unethical or illegal.

There are unscrupulous MLMs out there as there are in anything. Most good MLMs these days have a product or service that most of the downline uses and benefits from and can sell directly at will, but the power is in numbers. This only seems natural to me.

How is it unethical if it follows legal guidelines, is completely voluntary, and anyone involved has equal opportunity? The only ones that lose are the ones who don’t put forth the effort to build their MLM business after they made an investment. That is completely up to them and there is nothing wrong with that either. Some do, some don’t… so what!

For all of you interested or currently involved in network marketing. Don’t base your future on anybody’s negativity. Network marketing does not work after negativity sets in. If it is not for you then fine, just don’t let someone else cheat you out of what could be the best thing you have ever done.

Modern Network Marketing concepts are used by just about every big company out there including Best Buy, Avon, Amazon, eBay and countless others. The only thing unethical in MLM or Network Marketing is the individual with intentions of greed. If that is you, then please do not join this multi-billion dollar industry. The only way to get anywhere in this industry is to help others succeed. For a multitude of reasons, some simply can’t be helped and that, however sad, is okay. There are countless others out there that can benefit from and will appreciate your help!

Is MLM a scam?

It has been said that MLM’s are nothing more than scams. There are a lot of popular programs out there today that seem to employ the MLM strategy. What makes an MLM an MLM? Are these programs unethical and even illegal? If so, what makes it a scam?

First of all, let me say that every single business in the world is capable of illegal activity. That is because there is a human behind it. It is also possible for a company to appear illegal due to honest mistakes made by that human.

Of course, making mistakes and actually scamming someone is two different things, but from the outside looking in… it can look the same. Many people who have been ‘burnt’ usually think there is some kind of illegal activity going on. While some mistakes are illegal, the real issue is the intentions behind it. Is it greed or an unavoidable happenstance due to another issue? Mistakes are inevitable. What you do to correct your mistakes is what determines your long term destiny.

The point here is that it is not the business or the strategy that a victim should necessarily be upset with. Don’t close your mind to an idea or concept just because someone in the industry took advantage of you.

One possible indication of a scam is when it implies that you can get something for nothing. As you might be aware, those who expect something for nothing don’t get very far in any business. In most cases, I don’t think that is what these sites are offering at all. Though the advertising strategy it employs can make it seem that way to some and that is all relative.

For example: A program advertises that it is so easy… even a baby can do it. Well, we all know a baby can’t do it. It is also a fact that to some, it will be so extremely easy and to others it will be difficult. In any case, the ease of the program is determined by the users personal skills and experience. Yet, even if that person that finds it a challenge is teachable and determined he/she is likely to overcome and win.

I consider myself to be quite ethical and knowledgeable, but I can not see the wrong in most of today’s MLMs. Multi Level Marketing is simply a way to compound your efforts through networking. Networking is human nature. We network in our daily lives all the time. Even the family is a network. You teach your kids what you have learned and they learn from other family members. Hopefully, one day they will become successful from the collected knowledge.

Just because a business is MLM does not mean it is a scam. Even ‘brick and mortar’ franchises are a form of MLM. Online affiliate and MLM programs simply allow people from their home computers to get involved without being big time investors. I for one have no problem with the concept. It is just another word for what everyone does in every aspect of their lives anyway. It is natural.

The only reason why MLM has become a ‘four letter word’ is because of all the illegal pyramid and chain letter scams back in the 70’s and 80’s. Scams are rare these days because they are illegal and they don’t really get that far anyway. MLMs are legit and they do make people rich - that is fact. If it is not for you, than don’t do it.

I think that the reason some people have a problem with MLM is really because of their current understanding of the concept. Don’t close your mind just because you or someone you know had a bad experience. Using the collective power of people is the only way to gain real wealth and that practice takes many forms. MLM is just one of many.

Challenge: Show me what you think of as a true ‘MLM scam’. For every 10 brought to my attention, I can show why 9 of them are legal and how the making money idea behind it works.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not a radical MLM activist! In other words, I fully believe there are many different types of programs out there you can get involved with, MLM is not king. It really depends on you as to what works best for you individually. I am, however, trying to simply point out what will hopefully help others to open their minds about this misunderstood concept. Having an open mind is an important key to success. Knowing when you are really being scammed by someone or by yourself is another important key, and that is another subject all together!

What is a downline?

A downline is a group of people that you have recruited to a company’s MLM program and then teach them what you know about the company you are promoting so they can promote it and make money also.

Many companies have online affiliate programs like this to help spread the word about their business. Just about everyone is doing this these days including Amazon, Best Buy, Pay Pal, and hordes of others.

So when you join an affiliate program you usually get a program ID and that is used when ever you refer someone to the program, sale, or other promotions. They use your ID to track your sales and referrals so they can pay you a commission.

Sometimes these affiliate programs have a tier program where you can recruit other affiliates and earn a commission off of each of their efforts. This is where your roll becomes more like a sales manager. This group is often referred to as a downline. It is a network of people working together to promote the affiliate program. To me this is Network Marketing and some refer to it as Multi Level Marketing (MLM).

So if you are in a tiered affiliate program you can see how it would be profitable to learn about the program and teach others there by multiplying your income potential with the same amount of work. If you are going to focus on building a downline, rather than just direct selling, you want to build a list of like minded people to offer the program to.

In this case, building a list is a good way to build a downline. Therefore, the bigger your list, the more potential recruits you have for your downline. The faster you build this list, means you can build a downline faster and start making money sooner!

That is the basis of this thread. I hope it helps and isn’t to confusing. There are many similar terms here that are kind of smashed together here. The differences can seem subtle, but can be very different.

List – A list of targeted prospects that gave you permission (opted in) to contact them with offers they may be interested in.Downline – Group of people recruited by you, and those under you, to help promote a product or service for an affiliate or MLM program.Affiliate – Someone who promotes a program for commissions. This person is also sometimes called a distributor.

Affiliate Program – An affiliate program is a form of advertising that employs the power of ‘word of mouth’ or network marketing so sell a product or service. Network Marketing - A business in which a distributor network is needed to build the business. Usually such businesses are also MLM in nature in that payouts also occur at more than one level.

MLM - Multilevel Marketing is selling products by using independent distributors and allowing these distributors to build and manage their own sales force by recruiting, motivating, supplying, and training others to sell products. The distributors’ compensation includes their own sales and a percentage of the sales of their sales group (downline). Another description is any business where payouts occur at two or more levels; i.e., if you make a sale, both you and the person above you will get a portion of the proceeds.

Pyramid Schemes - A pyramid scheme is an illegal multilevel marketing program in which people pay an entrance fee for the opportunity to recruit others to do the same. Pyramid schemes usually have no products. Chain letters in which you send money to the person who sent you the letter, then you forward the same letter to a number of others is an example of a pyramid scheme.

Do affiliate sites really make money?

Of course! Many, many people make all kinds of money with affiliate sites and affiliate programs!

The fact is, only 5% who sign up for them ever become rich, but it is NOT usually because of the program! It is because the ‘buyer’ never gets past step two in a 200 step process. ALL businesses take time and effort to build. By the way, 5% is a very large number so don’t think for a second that you can not be in that group!

Basically, if you get involved in ANY business thinking it will be simple, the joke is on you! However, even the simplest of minds are capable of great things!

It doesn’t really matter what program you get involved with. It is possible to create wealth from all of them!

I say that because there are all kinds of people on this planet and the Internet is still growing like crazy. There will always be ‘newbies’ and there will always be ‘gurus’ and everything in between. Simply put, there is almost no way NOT to make money if you possess one simple trait… perseverance. With perseverance comes knowledge, with knowledge comes power, and with power comes wealth.

Just don’t blow your wad in one shot. Find a program that you think you can stay active with physically, mentally, and financially. Never give up and never listen to negative people! Garbage in… garbage out!

Keep in mind, even the ‘gurus’ started out as ‘newbies’!

All in all, there is so much that can be learned from affiliate sites and other such programs. Compared to a college education or a ‘brick and mortar’ franchise - $49 is nothing! I myself have literally spent hundreds on such programs and I don’t regret a thing!

Before all the parents get mad at me… I don’t discourage college! Kids – go to college! There is more to college than book learning even though that can be very beneficial too. You can not get that unique life experience from anywhere else!

Back to the subject… relatively speaking, there really are few ‘scams’ on the internet. Even if you are gullible enough to fall for a real stinky scam – you still learned something and that in of itself is worth something! Do not be afraid to make mistakes! That will only hold you back.
